Interact with peers who also use AAC. Important benefits to engaging with peer models. Normalize the use of AAC to communicate.
- Fun ways to practice social interactions using AAC that might not otherwise be readily available.
- Generalization of skills learned across contexts and settings. For example, children will be able to practice skills such as formulating multi-word utterances on their AAC systems in novel situations and contexts.
- 1:1 ratio for school-aged children who use AAC to a graduate student clinician. This ensures high-quality services for the children and clinical experience for graduate student clinicians.
- Combinations of both personalized/individualized + group approaches. Camp attendees will take part in opportunities one-on-one with student clinicians, where they will be able to practice personalized social and linguistic skills. Camp attendees will then engage in group activities (e.g., crafts) where they will be able to use language and engage using their AAC systems in fun activities with peers. This will also provide opportunities for learning novel vocabulary and practicing multi-word combinations (as appropriate).
- Opportunities for language expansion – new vocabulary
- Opportunities for new experiences for a typically underserved population
